Center for Women’s Health Questions and Answers

Women’s health is a broad term that refers to the many different aspect of female-centered healthcare. Women require very specialized care as they have a complex reproductive system that undergoes a lot of changes throughout their lives. Women’s health is especially important when pregnant and nursing.

What age should you go to the gynecologist?

The ideal age for a first gynecologic appointment varies from person to person. Here are a few factors to consider:

Early, late or irregular menstruation — In most cases, a girl’s menstrual period should begin between the ages of 12 and 13, three years after the onset of puberty. You may want to have her checked out by a gynecologist for a hormone imbalance if your daughter’s first period doesn’t fall into this window. She should see a doctor if periods remain irregular after more than a year or two.

Another result of overactive hormones can be exceptionally painful cramps or heavy periods. A visit to the gynecologist can help diagnose any issues with regular hormone production if pain and cramps are compromising your daughter’s quality of life or heavy periods last longer than a week. You should also schedule a visit if her periods soak more than 1-2 pads per hour or last more than seven days.

Sexual activity — Your daughter should begin receiving regular sexually transmitted disease screenings and vaginal health exams as soon as she becomes sexually active. Before the age of 26, your teen should also receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

How often should I see a gynecologist?

There is an abundance of conflicting information about how often you should see your gynecologist. It varies greatly from person to person, however, you should see your gynecologist regularly, if:

  • You don’t have a primary care physician
  • You are trying to get pregnant
  • You are pregnant
  • You have any period problems, such as irregular periods or unusually heavy or painful periods
  • You have multiple sexual partners and/or have unprotected sex
  • You have growths on or around your vagina or are experiencing any pain or burning during intercourse

What services does a gynecologist offer?

With a focus on the female reproductive system, gynecologists are doctors who specialize in women’s health. They deal with a wide range of issues including pregnancy and childbirth, fertility, menstruation, obstetrics, hormone disorders, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and others.

For general health issues, some women prefer to visit a well-woman clinic rather than a family doctor. They may then be referred to another specialist.
